ALEXANDER ALEXSON PENN

This witty award-winning screenwriter is the worst person I know in the best possible way.

At the age of 7, while his school mates were playing hide ’n’ seek, he was writing his first screenplay. Both angry and fascinated by life’s meaningless, he avoided Jewish school, enjoyed multiple panic attacks and spent time choosing the right Word doc font to shame and laugh at humanity.

Formerly a nationally-published journalist, he turned his back on that career to be a Mad-Men-style copywriter as he earns his stripes as a screenwriter.

His screenplays are hilarious, sarcastic and often violent — but they also have a romantic quality that point towards Penn’s marshmallow heart. He's a character and, contrary to what the The Wolf says in Pulp Fiction, that does mean his screenplays have character.

DARK COMEDY FINALIST

Nominated for Best Dark Comedy Short Screenplay. Final 5 from 1000s of entries

"There’s a high level of distinction to each character. They speak in their own voices, and none feel as if they’re being used as a writer’s tool to expedite the plot."

Chicago Screenplay Awards Coverage

"A startlingly original screenplay with exquisite dialogue and a touch of disturbing surrealism. The film-literate nature of the script is endlessly captivating"
