OVER BLACK
SMOOTH JAZZ is playing.
MALE VOICE
My uncle always told me this one
joke.
FEMALE VOICE
Oh? Tell me. I love jokes,
especially the funny ones.
MALE VOICE
Ok, you'll love this then.
FEMALE VOICE
Shoot.
MALE VOICE
What do people love but never like?
PAUSE.
MALE VOICE
Love.
Male voice starts laughing, hysterically.
INT. CLOUD NINE BAR & RESTAURANT- NIGHT
This clown is MAURICE (30s), a strange-looking academic,
convulsing with laughter. His laughter is funnier than the
joke.
The female voice starts laughing after a few moments -
fakely. A pity laugh.
His laughter dies down, finally. Maurice would be the
poster-boy of social awkwardness. Despite that, he has an
aloof magnetism that some dating experts might call an
'acquired taste'.
A notepad pokes out of his blazer breast pocket, beside a
banged-up biro pen.
MAURICE
I was very influenced by my uncle,
you see.
FEMALE VOICE (O.S)
Ah?
MAURICE
Gerald, Uncle Gerald as my sisters
and I called him. Well, what
happened to my Uncle Gerald always
stuck with me.
