ANDRONICUS (V.O.)
Dost thou attend me? Dost thou

Rapturous applause.
ANDRONICUS (V.O.)
Mooncalves, filth as thou art, dost
thou attend me?
INT. SHAKESPEAREAN PLAYHOUSE - NIGHT
SUPERIMPOSE: ‘1578 - SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE...’
A large crowd of bedraggled PEASANTS fill the floor of this open, public stage. Some are passed out, others are being promiscuous, but most are locked in mania at this rare treat of entertainment.
ANDRONICUS (O.S.)
Attend me.
PEASANTS
We attend. We attend.
ANDRONICUS, a wild-looking entertainer dressed like a flamboyant medieval clown, is pacing around the stage with rampant energy.
ANDRONICUS
If by ye art, thou hast chosen to
attend me, then I must tend to
thou, methinks.
Andronicus gaily hops off the stage into the crowd.
ANDRONICUS
‘Twixt myself and I, I bring forth
the fruit to tender aid. Aid with
my courtly wit.
Andronicus stops at a DRUNKEN FOOL, flailing around a cup of ale.
ANDRONICUS
Thou ist jocund, ist thou not?
The fool laughs. Andronicus grabs his cup from him, and kicks the fool over. The peasants explode in laughter. Andronicus runs back to the stage, and throws the ale onto the crowd.
ANDRONICUS
Drink, servant-monsters. Drink.
Andronicus picks up a cloth from the table and covers his hand with it.
ANDRONICUS
Life ist a barrel of mystery, dost
thou agree? I quoth many a man of
wisdom. Dost thou agree?
Andronicus removes the cloth from his hand. A dove appears. It flies into the stunned audience.
